Agabus

Agabus

Agabus (Greek: Ἄγαβος) or Agabo was an early follower of Christianity mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as a prophet.
He is traditionally remembered as one of the Seventy Disciples described in Luke 10:1-24.

According to extra-biblical tradition, Agabus appears to have been a resident of Jerusalem. He is said to have been one of the seventy disciples, mentioned in the Gospel of Luke, commissioned to preach the gospel.

It is said that Agabus was with the twelve apostles in the upper room on the day of Pentecost.

According to Acts 11:27-28, he was one of a group of prophets who travelled from Jerusalem to Antioch.
Agabus had received the gift of prophecy, and predicted a severe famine which the author of Acts says occurred during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius.

Also, according to Acts 21:10-12, ‘a certain prophet’, (Greek: τις) named Agabus met Paul the Apostle at Caesarea Maritima in 58 AD. He was, according to the Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary, ‘no doubt the same’ Agabus as had been mentioned in Acts 11:27-28, and Heinrich Meyer stated that ‘there is no reason against the assumed identity of this person with the one mentioned in Acts 11:28.

Agabus warned Paul of his coming capture; he bound his own hands and feet with Paul’s belt to demonstrate what would happen if he continued his journey to Jerusalem, stating the message of the Holy Spirit:

So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles“.

Paul, however, would not be persuaded to stay away.

Zechariah 13:6 – “Wounds Suffered at House of my Friends”

Introduction

For those who look for correlations between the Old and New Testament, the Book of Zechariah is noted for containing several Messianic references.

Among those references is our Title verse.

And, that verse reads:

And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thy hands?” Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”
( Zechariah 13:6 )

In this post, we will place a very tiny light to how various groups dissect that single verse and how it can mean different things when seen alone, when the first half a dozen verses are parsed, and when the entire chapter is digested.

Dissect

On its own

Let us look just at Verse 6, on its own.

Verse 6

And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thy hands?” Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”

When Zechariah 13:6 is examined at a verse level it can be seen at pointing to Jesus.

The wounds on his hands can be traced to his episodic encounter at the cross.

Verses : Zechariah 13:1-6

King James Version ( KJV )

1. “In that day” there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

2. And it shall come to pass “in that day,” saith ETERNAL of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the [false] prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

3. And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begot him shall say unto him, Thou shall not live; for thou speakest lies in the Name of ETERNAL: and his father and his mother that begot him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

4. And it shall come to pass “in that day,” that the [false] prophets shall be ashamed every one of his visions, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

5. But he shall say, “I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.”

6. And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thy hands?” Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”

Verse 1

“In that day” there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

Verse 1 contain a couple of key words and those are:

Fountain
  1. Fountain can mean water, spring, or baptismal
House of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem
  1. Can mean the Southern Kingdom?
    • Each of the prophets prophesied to the entire Jewish race or to a specific Kingdom, Northern or Southern

Sin and Uncleanness
  1. Sin means just that
  2. Uncleanness
    • Idolatry
    • Spirits

Verse 2

And it shall come to pass “in that day,” saith ETERNAL of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the [false] prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

Verse 2 gets into when things will happen and whom and what problems will be taken care of.

In that Day
  1. Can mean at Messiah’s first coming
  2. Or second coming
  3. Millennium Rule
Eternal of Hosts

God

Marked for destruction
  1. Idols
    • The very idols that causes idolatry
  2. Land
    • House of Israel
    • Earth
  3. No more be remembered
    • New Mind and a new heart
      • Jeremiah
  4. False Prophets
  5. Unclean Spirits
    • Satan and his cohorts

Verse 3

And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begot him shall say unto him, Thou shall not live; for thou speakest lies in the Name of ETERNAL: and his father and his mother that begot him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

Expounds on how the duty falls on the parents to confront the prophet and pretty much slay him.

Unfortunately, in the old testament, family often paid for the sins of a man, as well

Verse 4

And it shall come to pass “in that day,” that the [false] prophets shall be ashamed every one of his visions, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

Prophets are often pictured as having an austere look and disposition.

Verse 5

But he shall say, “I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.”

The verse 5 is a rebuttal that the prophet will give when confronted.

When asked whether he has been masquerading as a prophet, he will reply “Oh No!”.

Essentially, disowning the Prophetic trade and claiming to be a lifelong Shepherd.

Verse 6

And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thy hands?”
Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”

In the Old Testament, there are some verses that talks about self mutilation and others that talks about the family’s own responsibility when they consider one of their own to be a false prophet.

They include:

  1. Elijah & the Prophets of Baal
And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made.

And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”
And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.
And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.
    ( 1 King 18:26-29 )
  2. Idolaters to Be Put to Death
    If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
…you shall not yield to him or listen to him; and your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him.
“But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
    ( Deuteronomy 13: 6-9 )

Summary

It seems that when Zechariah 13:1-6 is looked at in its entirety it speaks to a time of re-awakening and purging that goes along with that.

The seeking out of those that might have peddled falsehood.  Their subsequent questioning.  And, how they might try to get out of sentencing.

At a later time, will come back and complete our effort by looking at Zechariah 13 in it’s entirety.

While he was in the hospital, Pope John Paul reviewed the Church’s documentation of Fatima and the Third Secret of Fatima. He was convinced that Our Lady of Fatima had saved his life. Later that year, he had a mosaic of the Virgin Mary (Mater Ecclesiae — Mother of the Church) installed on St. Peter’s Square. He went three times afterwards to the shrine of Fatima in Portugal (1982, 1991 and 2000) — to thank the Virgin Mary. On March 25, 1984, to fulfill the request of Our Lady of Fatima, the Pope consecrated the world — including Russia — to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Communism collapsed soon afterward. As a measure of his gratitude, John Paul gave the bullet that was extracted from his abdomen to the shrine; the bullet today forms part of the crown of the statue of the Virgin of Fatima. During John Paul’s 2000 visit to Fatima, the third part of the message the Virgin gave to the three children in 1917 was revealed; it was a description of the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul: the “bishop clothed in white” who prays for all the faithful is the Pope. As he makes his way with great effort towards the Cross amid the corpses of those who were martyred (bishops, priests, men and women religious and many lay persons), he too falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a burst of gunfire.

Leonard Ravenhill

Introduction

Link
Leonard Ravenhill (June 18, 1907 – November 27, 1994) was an English Christian evangelist and author who focused on the subjects of prayer and revival. He is best known for challenging western evangelicalism (through his books and sermons) to compare itself to the early Christian Church as chronicled in the Book of Acts.

His most notable book is Why Revival Tarries which has sold over a million copies worldwide.

Among others influenced by Ravenhill were Keith Green, Ravi Zacharias, Tommy Tenney, Steve Hill, Michael L. Brown, Charles Stanley, Bill Gothard, Paul Washer, and David Wilkerson.

He was a close friend of pastor and writer A.W. Tozer.

Through his teaching and books, Ravenhill addressed the disparities he perceived between the New Testament Church and the Church in his time and called for adherence to the principles of Biblical revival.
Tozer said of Ravenhill:

To such men as this, the church owes a debt too heavy to pay. The curious thing is that she seldom tries to pay him while he lives.

Rather, the next generation builds his sepulchre and writes his biography –

as if instinctively and awkwardly to discharge an obligation the previous generation to a large extent ignored“.

Quotes

  1. The greatest miracle that God can do today is to take an unholy man out of an unholy world and make him holy, then put him back into that unholy world and keep him holy in it.
  2. A man who is intimate with God is not intimidated by man.
  3. No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying. We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few pray-ers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters. Failing here, we fail everywhere.
  4. If we displease God, does it matter whom we please? If we please Him does it matter whom we displease?
  5. You can’t live wrong and pray right.
  6. Book has become a Curse, borrow your sermon, it can’t be yours anyhow
  7. The only reason we don’t have revival is because we are willing to live without it!
  8. I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, “Save OUR children” bellow “Build more and bigger bombers.” That’s right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from “OUR” bombers! This does not jell.”
  9. Today’s church wants to be raptured from responsibility.
  10. Are the things you are living for worth Christ dying for?
  11. A sinning man stops praying, a praying man stops sinning
  12. God pity us that after years of writing, using mountains of paper and rivers of ink, exhausting flashy terminology about the biggest revival meetings in history, we are still faced with gross corruption in every nation, as well as with the most prayerless church age since Pentecost
  13. The Church used to be a lifeboat rescuing the perishing. Now she is a cruise ship recruiting the promising.
  14. If Jesus had preached the same message that ministers preach today, He would never have been crucified.
  15. I fear the prayers of John Knox more than all the armies of England – Queen of Scotland ( Link )
  16. If you stand before God, you will never kneel before man
  17. A christianity that is not supernatural, is superficial
  18. Faith that is going to be trusted, is gonna be tested
  19. God sends a fire on the sacrifice, not on the altar
