Agabus

Agabus

Agabus (Greek: Ἄγαβος) or Agabo was an early follower of Christianity mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as a prophet.
He is traditionally remembered as one of the Seventy Disciples described in Luke 10:1-24.

According to extra-biblical tradition, Agabus appears to have been a resident of Jerusalem. He is said to have been one of the seventy disciples, mentioned in the Gospel of Luke, commissioned to preach the gospel.

It is said that Agabus was with the twelve apostles in the upper room on the day of Pentecost.

According to Acts 11:27-28, he was one of a group of prophets who travelled from Jerusalem to Antioch.
Agabus had received the gift of prophecy, and predicted a severe famine which the author of Acts says occurred during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius.

Also, according to Acts 21:10-12, ‘a certain prophet’, (Greek: τις) named Agabus met Paul the Apostle at Caesarea Maritima in 58 AD. He was, according to the Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary, ‘no doubt the same’ Agabus as had been mentioned in Acts 11:27-28, and Heinrich Meyer stated that ‘there is no reason against the assumed identity of this person with the one mentioned in Acts 11:28.

Agabus warned Paul of his coming capture; he bound his own hands and feet with Paul’s belt to demonstrate what would happen if he continued his journey to Jerusalem, stating the message of the Holy Spirit:

So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles“.

Paul, however, would not be persuaded to stay away.

Kerygma

Link
In short, the Kerygma is the gospel.

The Greek word kerygma describes what was a well-known practice in the ancient world. When a king wanted to publicize his decrees throughout his realm, he would send a kerux, what we know in English as a town crier or herald. Often a trusted advisor or confidant of the king, the kerux or herald would travel throughout the empire announcing the kerygma–the news the king wanted delivered. This was especially important in the context of war. When the king’s army won a great battle thereby conquering new territory, the herald would travel within the newly acquire regions announcing the victory and proclaiming the order of the newly expanded kingdom.

In Mark 1, as he is launching his earthly ministry, Jesus himself takes on this role. Verses 14-15: “Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.'” He announced the coming of a new kingdom and explained what it took to live in it: repentance and faith.

The New Testament apostles quickly adopted this imagery and language to describe their roles as heralds traveling through the earthly realm announcing the arrival and victory of King Jesus and explaining the order of his kingdom. They were declaring a kerygma–a proclamation they were called to deliver to the world. The essence of this proclamation is the good news (euangelion). It is the announcement that the time all of history was waiting for had come; the king had arrived; and through his death, resurrection and exaltation, he had won the victory and was enforcing his kingdom. This message animated the early church. It drove Paul and the other apostles to risk–and ultimately give up–their lives for just another opportunity to make the announcement.

Over the years, the Kerygma became the designation for the essential, irreducible elements of the apostolic gospel of the New Testament church. In it’s most basic form it contains five elements. The Kerygma is the declaration that:

The coming of Jesus Christ fulfills all the promises of history and inaugurates the kingdom of God on earth;

Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection accomplishes the forgiveness of sin;

From his exalted position as ascended Messiah, Jesus rules all things;

The presence of the Holy Spirit signifies his present reign and empowers believers to fulfill their destiny as image-bearers; and

This declaration demands a response of repentance and complete trust.

When the apostles preached the kerygma they were not just telling about Jesus, his teachings, and his miracles. He was present in their preaching, and thus those who heard them would either embrace him or reject him. To some it would be scandalous. To others it would be foolish. But to those who could hear, it was supernatural power and divine wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:21-25). Paul refused to let traditional oratory or human persuasion get in the way of the message. He wanted the fruit of the proclamation to be personal faith rather than understanding or applause.

Kerygma Ventures recently changed our name from Successful Christian Living Ministries because kerygma more fully communicates the content of our message and the solemnity of our mission. We are under mandate to announce what God has done in Christ with all its ramifications. We are also under constraint to accurately proclaim and practice nothing beyond and nothing short of his gospel. If we just preach about him or his teachings, we fail. We must present him. In the power of the Spirit, we expect his word to accomplish what it always does when it goes forth. The miracles that accompany his word will affirm that he is still proclaiming the arrival of the kingdom of God.

Herschel Walker

Herschel Walker is widely regarded as one of football’s greatest running backs. He led the University of Georgia to victory in the Sugar Bowl on the way to an NCAA Championship and he capped a sensational college career by earning the 1982 Heisman Trophy. Herschel spent twelve years in the NFL, where he rushed for more than eight thousand yards and scored sixty-one rushing touchdowns.

But despite the acclaim he won as a football legend, track star, Olympic competitor, and later a successful businessman, Herschel realized that his life, at times, was simply out of control. He often felt angry, self-destructive, and unable to connect meaningfully with friends and family. Drawing on his deep faith, Herschel turned to professionals for help and was ultimately diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder.

While some might have taken this diagnosis as a setback, Herschel approached his mental health with the same indomitable spirit he brought to the playing field. It also gave him, for the first time, insight into his life’s unexplained passages, stretches of time that seemed forever lost. Herschel came to understand that during those times, his “alters,” or alternate personalities, were in control.

Born into a poor, but loving family in the South, Herschel was an overweight child with a stutter who suffered terrible bullying at school. He now understands that he created “alters” who could withstand abuse. But beyond simply enduring, other “alters” came forward to help Herschel overcome numerous obstacles and, by the time he graduated high school, become an athlete recognized on a national level.

In Breaking Free, Herschel tells his story — from the joys and hardships of childhood to his explosive impact on college football to his remarkable professional career. And he gives voice and hope to those suffering from DID. Herschel shows how this disorder played an integral role in his accomplishments and how he has learned to live with it today. His compelling account testifies to the strength of the human spirit and its ability to overcome any challenge.

Book

I googled on the phase  “those who read the scripture must be able to help outsiders“.

And, here is what came up.

Timothy H. Lim – The Formation of the Jewish Canon

Page 99

The Prologue helps clarify the grandson’s understanding of the scribal curriculum.
It provides direct access in the form of the grandsons own words:

Whereas many great teachings have been given to us through the Law and the Prophets and the others that followed them, and for these we should praise Israel for Instruction and wisdom.

Now those who read the scriptures must not only themselves understand them, but must also as lovers of learning be able through the spoken and written word to help the outsiders.

So may grandfather Jesus, who had devoted himself especially to the reading of the Law and the Prophets and the other books of our ancestors, and had acquired considerable proficiency in them, was himself also led to write something pertaining to instruction and wisdom, so that by becoming familiar with his book those who love learning might make even further progress in living according to the law.

You are invited therefore to read it with goodwill and attention, and to be indulgent in cases where, despite our diligent labor in translating, we may seem to have rendered some phases imperfectly.

For what was originally expressed in Hebrew does not have exactly the same sense when translated into another language. Not only this book, but even the Law itself, the Prophecies, and the rest of the books differ not a little when read in the original.

When I came to Egypt in the thirty-eight year of reign of Euergetes ad stayed for some time, I found opportunity for no little instruction.

It seemed highly necessary that I should myself devote some diligence and labor to the transcribing.

Page 100

The rationale for writing the Prologue is clear enough. The grandson wants to introduce his grandfather’s book of wisdom to those who love learning.

The addresses, “you” in the plural, are invited to read it, so that they will make further progress in living according to the law.

The grandson’s intended audience is the Greek-speaking Jews of Egypt. He describes them as “those living abroad”.

Moreover, they were probably scribes as the following descriptors, imply: “those who read (scripture)” and the “lovers of learning”.

The word “scribe” occurs in several verses of scripture.

These scribes must not just understand the great teachings of Israelite scriptures, but must also help the outsiders.

Skehan and Di Lella have suggested that what stands behind this reference to the outsiders is the narrative of Nehemiah 8:8-12.

The phrase is better rendered as “those who are without them” and refers to the laity or to those who are unable to read the original scriptures because they lack the scriptures or wisdom. The scribes, therefore, must in speech and in writing help the laity.

The nature of the scribal assistance, however, is not through translation and explication in the way that the Levites went around and offered help to those who heard the reading of the law in the square before the Water Gate ( Neh 8:7).

The scribes, to be sure, must have been bilingual, as the appeal to goodwill and indulgence in assessing the imperfect translation implies.

But, it is not their translational skills that are needed here.

Rather, so the grandson specifies, the scribal aid consists of oral teaching and the drafting of a book of instruction and wisdom.

Zechariah 13:6 – “Wounds Suffered at House of my Friends”

Introduction

For those who look for correlations between the Old and New Testament, the Book of Zechariah is noted for containing several Messianic references.

Among those references is our Title verse.

And, that verse reads:

And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thy hands?” Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”
( Zechariah 13:6 )

In this post, we will place a very tiny light to how various groups dissect that single verse and how it can mean different things when seen alone, when the first half a dozen verses are parsed, and when the entire chapter is digested.

Dissect

On its own

Let us look just at Verse 6, on its own.

Verse 6

And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thy hands?” Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”

When Zechariah 13:6 is examined at a verse level it can be seen at pointing to Jesus.

The wounds on his hands can be traced to his episodic encounter at the cross.

Verses : Zechariah 13:1-6

King James Version ( KJV )

1. “In that day” there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

2. And it shall come to pass “in that day,” saith ETERNAL of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the [false] prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

3. And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begot him shall say unto him, Thou shall not live; for thou speakest lies in the Name of ETERNAL: and his father and his mother that begot him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

4. And it shall come to pass “in that day,” that the [false] prophets shall be ashamed every one of his visions, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

5. But he shall say, “I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.”

6. And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thy hands?” Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”

Verse 1

“In that day” there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

Verse 1 contain a couple of key words and those are:

Fountain
  1. Fountain can mean water, spring, or baptismal
House of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem
  1. Can mean the Southern Kingdom?
    • Each of the prophets prophesied to the entire Jewish race or to a specific Kingdom, Northern or Southern

Sin and Uncleanness
  1. Sin means just that
  2. Uncleanness
    • Idolatry
    • Spirits

Verse 2

And it shall come to pass “in that day,” saith ETERNAL of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the [false] prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

Verse 2 gets into when things will happen and whom and what problems will be taken care of.

In that Day
  1. Can mean at Messiah’s first coming
  2. Or second coming
  3. Millennium Rule
Eternal of Hosts

God

Marked for destruction
  1. Idols
    • The very idols that causes idolatry
  2. Land
    • House of Israel
    • Earth
  3. No more be remembered
    • New Mind and a new heart
      • Jeremiah
  4. False Prophets
  5. Unclean Spirits
    • Satan and his cohorts

Verse 3

And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begot him shall say unto him, Thou shall not live; for thou speakest lies in the Name of ETERNAL: and his father and his mother that begot him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

Expounds on how the duty falls on the parents to confront the prophet and pretty much slay him.

Unfortunately, in the old testament, family often paid for the sins of a man, as well

Verse 4

And it shall come to pass “in that day,” that the [false] prophets shall be ashamed every one of his visions, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

Prophets are often pictured as having an austere look and disposition.

Verse 5

But he shall say, “I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.”

The verse 5 is a rebuttal that the prophet will give when confronted.

When asked whether he has been masquerading as a prophet, he will reply “Oh No!”.

Essentially, disowning the Prophetic trade and claiming to be a lifelong Shepherd.

Verse 6

And one shall say unto him, “What are these wounds in thy hands?”
Then he shall answer, “Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.”

In the Old Testament, there are some verses that talks about self mutilation and others that talks about the family’s own responsibility when they consider one of their own to be a false prophet.

They include:

  1. Elijah & the Prophets of Baal
And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made.

And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”
And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.
And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.
    ( 1 King 18:26-29 )
  2. Idolaters to Be Put to Death
    If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
…you shall not yield to him or listen to him; and your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him.
“But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
    ( Deuteronomy 13: 6-9 )

Summary

It seems that when Zechariah 13:1-6 is looked at in its entirety it speaks to a time of re-awakening and purging that goes along with that.

The seeking out of those that might have peddled falsehood.  Their subsequent questioning.  And, how they might try to get out of sentencing.
