Microsoft – Web Deployment Agent Service – Error – “Windows could not start the ‘Web Deployment Agent Service’ service on Server

Experienced this problem earlier in the week.  Looking through Microsoft Event Viewer Log, found entries such as :

Do you get the same error information “The agent service could not start listening on the URL ‘http://+:80/MSDEPLOYAGENTSERVICE/’. Make sure that the URL is not in use.” in event log?

As always Goggled a bit and ended up with:

Thread: can not start the Web Deployment Agent Service
http://forums.iis.net/t/1161387.aspx

which basically states that to determine whether port 80 is already in-use and if so change the port# for the “Web Deployment Agent Service”

Steps we followed:

  1. Used netstat command
    netstat -anb > > netstat.log
  2. Reviewed netstat.log and found the Application currently using port 80
  3. Confirmed that we wanted to keep that Application on port 80
  4. Uninstalled “Web Deployment Agent Service”
  5. Launched Customized Install — targeting port 8080

Install Step

msiexec /i E:\Downloads\Microsoft\WebDeploy\v2.0\x64\WebDeploy_2_10_amd64_en-US.msi /l E:\Install\WebDeploy_2_10_amd64_en-US.log /passive ADDLOCAL=ALL LISTENURL=http://+:8080/MsDeployAgentService2/
