Microsoft – OLE DB Providers – Creating UDL File – Error – Properties you entered cannot be saved because the Data Link file is inacccessible

Trying to create a 32-bit OLE-DB UDL File:

  1. Launch a command prompt
  2. Enter the command pasted below
Syntax:

C:\Windows\syswow64\rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\oledb32.dll",OpenDSLFile <file-name>

Sample:

C:\Windows\syswow64\rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\oledb32.dll",OpenDSLFile e:\XE.udl


Error

Error Title:

Microsoft Data Link

Error Message:

Properties you entered cannot be saved because the Data Link file is inacccessible.  Ensure that the hard drive or network share is still available

 

Error Message (Interpretation)

The error message is a bit in-direct.  And, a more helpful message will be “Please pre-create the file will suffice”.

Fix

There are a couple of ways to create an empty file

  1. Create the file using Windows Explorer
  2. Create the file from the OS Shell using copy con <filename>
    
    
    Syntax:
    
          copy con <filename>
    
    Sample:
    
          copy con xe.udl
